Do you think the patronage system is a good idea? Why or why not?

Answers

Answer 1

Although the patronage system has been in use throughout history, it has received much criticism for being a dishonest and ineffective form of government.

On the one hand, proponents of the patronage system contend that by rewarding individuals who have worked hard to elect their party, it contributes to political stability. Moreover, they contend that by elevating devoted members, it fosters a sense of solidarity inside the party.

The patronage system is said to be fundamentally corrupt and to foster cronyism and nepotism, according to detractors. They contend that it fosters a climate in which elected officials are more preoccupied with rewarding political allies than they are with acting in the general welfare of the populace.

Although there are many critics and supporter of the system, it would be better if the promotion should be based on the qualification and experience.

Write a 5 paragraph argument essay in which you argue wether or not the united states is free society

Answers

The United States is often touted as a free society, where individuals have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, there are several factors that suggest the US may not be as free as many people believe.

Firstly, the United States has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, with around 2.3 million people currently behind bars. While some may argue that these individuals have committed crimes and deserve to be punished, the disproportionate impact of the criminal justice system on communities of color suggests that there are underlying issues of systemic racism and bias. This indicates that not everyone has equal access to freedom and justice in the United States.

Secondly, the US has a long history of limiting individual freedoms in the name of national security. This has been evident in policies such as the Patriot Act, which grants the government broad surveillance powers and allows for the indefinite detention of individuals deemed to be a threat to national security. While national security is undoubtedly important, it is essential to ensure that individual liberties are not infringed upon in the process.

Thirdly, the United States has a significant wealth gap, with a small percentage of the population controlling the majority of the country's wealth. This means that many individuals do not have access to the same opportunities and resources as those in positions of power, which can limit their ability to exercise their freedoms and pursue their goals.

However, it is also important to note that the United States has made significant strides in promoting individual freedoms in certain areas. For example, the country has a long history of advocating for free speech and freedom of the press, which allows individuals to express themselves and hold those in power accountable. Additionally, the country has made progress in promoting equality and reducing discrimination in areas such as LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality.

In conclusion, while the United States may not be a completely free society, it is also not entirely unfree. There are certainly areas in which individual liberties are limited or unequal, but there are also areas in which the country has made progress in promoting and protecting individual freedoms. It is essential to continue to strive towards a more just and equitable society where everyone has the same opportunities and freedoms to pursue their goals and live fulfilling lives.

Answer:

D. They felt that it should be used to encourage Japanese to end the war by inviting them to witness the blast.

Explanation:

D. They felt that it should be used to encourage Japanese to end the war by inviting them to witness the blast.

Scientists who disagreed with using the atomic bomb in Japan, such as Leo Szilard and Harold Urey, felt that the bomb should be used as a demonstration to encourage the Japanese to surrender and end the war. They proposed the idea of inviting Japanese officials to witness the bomb's destructive power without causing any actual harm, as a way to show the devastating effects of the weapon and convince the Japanese to surrender.

This idea was known as the "demonstration option," but it was ultimately rejected by the US government, as it was believed that a quick and decisive end to the war was necessary to save American lives and end the conflict with Japan.

What impact do you think the harnessing of atomic power has on the environment ?

Answers

Answer:

The harnessing of atomic power has both positive and negative impacts on the environment. On the positive side, atomic power is a clean and efficient source of energy that does not produce greenhouse gases or contribute to global warming. It also reduces the need for fossil fuels, which can have a significant impact on air and water pollution.

However, on the negative side, atomic power also produces radioactive waste, which is extremely hazardous to human health and the environment. This waste must be carefully managed and stored in secure facilities to prevent contamination of the environment.

Additionally, the production and disposal of nuclear materials can also have negative impacts on land use, water resources, and biodiversity. There is also a risk of accidents and disasters, such as those seen at Chernobyl and Fucushima, which can have devastating impacts on both human health and the environment.

Overall, the harnessing of atomic power must be carefully managed and regulated to minimize its negative impacts on the environment and ensure its safety and sustainability.

What is the best definition for Arkansas' Cooperationists.

B those who were willing to wait and see what happened
C people who were willing to help their neighbors during time of war
D those who were willing to object to the Confederacy's plans hurry it’s due on Sunday pls help me

Answers

Answer:

The best definition for Arkansas' Cooperationists is option B: those who were willing to wait and see what happened.

Cooperationists were a group of people in Arkansas who wanted to avoid secession from the United States and instead sought a compromise solution to the crisis of the 1860s. They believed in working with the federal government and other states to find a solution that would preserve the Union, rather than immediately seceding from it. While they were not necessarily opposed to slavery, they believed that the issue should not be the sole cause of secession.

Thus, Cooperationists were not people who immediately wanted to secede from the Union (option A), nor were they people who were willing to help their neighbors during time of war (option C). Option D is not a correct definition for Cooperationists as it describes a different group or idea.

Was Richard Nixon concerned with the welfare and growth of all citizens or just some of them (could be economic, political, or social)?

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, had a complex legacy when it comes to his concern for the welfare and growth of all citizens. While he implemented some policies that benefited all Americans, he also pursued policies that disproportionately favored certain groups over others.

On the one hand, Nixon's administration implemented policies that aimed to improve the economic well-being of all citizens, such as the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. He also introduced policies to expand access to healthcare and food assistance programs, and he signed into law the Title IX legislation that prohibited sex discrimination in education.

However, Nixon was also criticized for pursuing policies that negatively impacted certain groups of citizens. For example, his administration opposed affirmative action policies, which were designed to address systemic discrimination and improve access to opportunities for marginalized groups. He also pursued policies that targeted Black Americans, such as his "war on drugs," which disproportionately impacted communities of color, and his opposition to busing as a means of desegregating schools.

Additionally, Nixon was implicated in a number of scandals that demonstrated a disregard for the rule of law and the rights of citizens, such as the Watergate scandal and the illegal surveillance of political opponents.

In conclusion, while Nixon's administration implemented policies that aimed to improve the welfare and growth of all citizens, his record is mixed when it comes to issues of economic, political, and social equality.

What term was not in use during the golden age of Greece? Why not?

CITY-STATES
During the golden age of Greece the term "Greece" was not yet in use. The area called Greece today was dotted with various city-states who had no desire to be united into a larger country. As their name implies, city-states were large areas of land whose inhabitants fell under the rule of the city in the midst. Powerful lords built their castle-like keeps on the highest point of the city and surrounded them with high walls. In times of war, those who farmed the surrounding countryside would flee into the city for safety. Because of this, Athens and the Greek cities were more than just a city; they were the law and protection of the surrounding plains.
The heart of every Greek city was the agora, the marketplace. It was the economic, political, and religious lifeblood of the city. Almost every agora was dotted with statues, temples, public buildings, and trees. In Athens, the agora is where the Assembly of the People met to vote on city issues.
There were frequent, city-wide festivals to honor various gods. Music, drama, and poetry were often exhibited during these, and a multitude of sacrifices made at the temples.

The braceros were guaranteed certain rights and protections, including a minimum wage, housing, and medical care.

Overall, the Bracero Program brought hundreds of thousands of Mexican workers to the United States to work on farms and in factories during World War II, and had a significant impact on the agricultural and industrial sectors of the American economy.

In 1938 Mexico was the first major oil producer in the world to nationalize its oil industry, and so this decision marks a historical shift in the country's history. In 1982, former president Miguel de la Madrid began a process of development to move away from the previous closed economy and to increase trade opportunities and business exehanges with other nations. However, even after the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement led to liberalization of the economy, oil remained as a last bastion of the era. This latest move will mean that the nationalized oil and gas market, currently run by Pemex will change to become an environment where private companies can search for and produce oil and natural gas. Foreign corporations will also be able to open up petrol stations, previously unheard of in the country. Investors wishing to step into the oil market must do so under contract with the Mexican government, and will pay taxes and royalties. In retum they bave control of the oil that comes out of the well. The Mexican state still retains ownership of the oil remaining underground. One of reasons for the shift is that Pemex no longer has the capital or know-how to extract the remaining reserves, especially in the high potential but difficult to reach waters in the Gulf of Mexico, and the shale-rock between Texas and northern Mexico. One of the problems is that no one knows how much oil is there. The nation's oif production is now just above 2.5 million barrels a day, a decrease of 25 percent since its peak in 2004 . Pemex has spent the last decade continuously increasing its spending for diminishing retums. The decision to open up the market has its risks. The increased investment from the keen foreign corporations may lead to a rise in the value of the Mexican Peso and undercut the rise in exports from cheaper gas. Corruption, already a problem in the country, may also be exacerbated. One important issue to be ironed out is how this industry is to be regulated. Until now, Pemex has largely regulated itself, and does not have a very good reputation. Future plans for regulation have to be seen to be just and transparent, and many issues are still not resolved. One of the points that still need to be clarified includes the mechanism for deciding on the priority for development of oil and gas blocs. The second is a decision on the contract model; will it be profit-sharing, production-sharing of concessionlike licenses? These are all issues that the Energy Ministry, the agency in charge, will have to decide and communicate on as soon as: possible. The social impact of this decision cannot be overstated. Children learnt at school that oil nationalization was a symbol of its independence from foreign countries, notably its powerful neighbor the U.S. Coupled with this is the widespread cynicism about where the revenue will go. The oil revenue paid for 40 pereent of Mexico's public spending, and there is a worry that this will disappear into foreign pockets and corrupt officials' bank accounts. Mexicans still remember what happened when its banks and telephone companies were privatized. They still pay substantially more for credit and phone service than their Latin American neighbors, and they fear that the same will be so for gas in the future. In spite of this, some of the population is cautiously waiting to see the results. If this move leads to an improvement in the standard of living, particularly of the poorer citizens, and if there is higher foreign investment in the national infrastructure it could tum out to be a win-win situation. Both the Mexican state and foreign investors hope to benefit, and it could be an opportunity not to be missed for the U.S. to become energy independent in the future. QuestionsQ1. Discuss how Mexico's economy and society can benefit from the opening up of the oil industry to foreign investors?Q2. What are the risks for Mexico and for potential investors?Q3. What can be put into place to ensure that this process is seen as legitimate by Mexican citizens?
