However, there was disagreement among American politicians over how to avert such a fight, particularly whether or not to send soldiers in that direction.
After Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982, proponents of military action gained ground. However, by 1984, President Ronald Reagan had ordered the withdrawal of American Marines from Lebanon due to terrorist assaults, a lack of diplomatic success, and legislative resistance. To stop them from capturing the vital Sannin hill in Lebanon in April 1981, the Israeli Air Force assaulted Syrian soldiers there. Surface-to-air missiles fired by Syria were fired into the Biqa Valley in retaliation.
